Crossing the Finish Line

Beta version w18 is live; It should fix the column bug, focus-grabbing, and other minor issues. Thanks to a diligent, skilled, and generally nifty volunteer tester, I was able to iron out the IE6-specific issues. This version has passed all tests on IE6, IE7, Safari 3, and Firefox 2. I'm going to leave it alone for a few hours, and if disaster doesn't strike, I will make the supremely painful (for fans of the old interface) switch-over from WEBoggle.

If you are an old-interface fan, please explore the customization possibilities of WordSplay's interface before you give up on it. Drag the panels around, resize the board, turn the guess notifications on and off - take it for a proper spin. It has lots of options.

If you can't play, due to some bug, email me right away and describe the step at which the game fails (loading the front page, registering, logging in, going to a game, etc), your browser and operating system, and the result of visiting http://www.wordsplay.net/?tests. I will do my utmost to get the new game working for everyone - I don't want any of you to be left out!

*cry* It is not working again!
I was able to play last night/early morning, I think right when you loaded the v18. But I go to play now, and again it doesn't work. Same problem as before. Newest Safari, and every other web browser, will not work with this! The game must hate Macs :(
FYI: I tried logging out, emptying cache in Safari - both with no success.

If you need a little help with testing any fixes, please feel free to ask me. I like this game, and I want to be able to play it again!

Update: Using this method, I was able to get the game board to load:
Log out
Select 'Your Game Name' and clicking 'Use This Name'
Click on 'Play 4x4', without logging in. And the game board loaded.
I then logged in, clicked on Play and the game loaded again (with me logged in). However, each time I leave the site, things go back to not working unless I do the whole above process again.
Also, when I am able to play while logged in, the game layout/customizations are not saved between visits.
It seems like a mix between cookie issues and also the actual link to the game boards.

If you'd like more info (bug report/code snips to show what is going on) or a tester, please feel free to email me on gmail - the name there is katlady (not going to type out the email addy in order to avoid spambots) or look at my blogger profile to see my AIM screen-name.

I am running on Firefox and also cannot get in. It crashed my browser twice.

On the plus side, I can now see and enter my name.

My Firefox is 1.03, so I'm going to upgrade it an try again.

btw I love the game and the new interface is nice, except that the scores of the players are cutoff. I have to use the slidy bar to see them. Would be nice if we could readjust it.

Firefox 2.0 solved both problems. The game loads and plays and the window for the scores also displays in full.

I'm not having any problems playing, but there is a design feature I'd like changed. On the old game, when you typed a "word" that wasn't on the board, all the highlighting disappeared immediately so that you knew you typed something wrong. On the knew game that doesn't happen. Not only that, but when you hit enter the word disappears with no indication of what happened to it.

I realize that you don't want to say (not in dictionary/not on board) for words that are not on board (because you're preloading all the words), but you should give some indication that the "word" that was typed was not on the board, whether or not it is in the dictionary.

Plus, please give some immediate feedback like the old game did.

Thanks.

I can't seem to run my mouse over the wordlist anymore and have the board tell me who got that word. What am I missing?

Feedback is configurable - you can have the game warn you in a number of different ways when words are invalid, or when they are valid, for that matter.

Not clearing the highlighting when a not-on-board word is typed, though, that's a bug. I've got it fixed in the next version.

I hate to be a party pooper, but I really prefer the old game (I've tried the new one many times during beta). I much prefer the larger size and font on the old board. and the new version is just logy and slow--by the time the scores are posted the new game has started.
the new version has so many more bells & whistles--bring back the simple old game!

Just to give some positive feedback, I love the new interface! My only complaint is the speed - is there anything that can be done to speed things up?

My family all like to play this game as a team and we can't get on to the same team even if we type exactly the same names. What do we do to be able to actually be a TEAM.

Firefox 2.0 for Mac: The highlighting of letters can't keep up with my typing. The little beach ball appears regularly to do its thing - and slow me down. Very frustrating. Not Mac-friendly... guess I'll have to play only at work...

The game sports a clunky Win95-style interface; it's seriously dysfunctional in all five of the Mac browsers I've tried; it's unnecessarily tedious (and, as it turns out, largely ineffective) to customize; and worst of all, it's no fun.

Thanks very much for the old Weboggle, Evan. Good luck!

AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! Don't do this, it's not ready for primetime yet!

Interminable "contacting server", so I refreshed, and now there's a completely blank page.

Seriously, the new versions, while certainly improving, are NOT ready. Don't take our fallback (the old site) away! Please!!!

The new version is seriously taking the fun out of the game. It is too busy, has too many options and the interface is too clunky. It took me a good couple of minutes to get used to the Word List for last round settings and I still don't know if the "Only" button is enabled or disabled.

It has some serious usability violations. I'll probably still play but my sessions won't last as long and won't be as impulsive.

Looks OK so far. Some bugs:

- Snapshot doesn't work at all. A window appears saying "Javascript code / Code to execute: " with an empty box where the "code to execute" would be. Clicking either "OK" or "Cancel" at that point has no effect.

- Still not sorting by length. You are sorting all the 3- and 4-letter words together, I assume because they are both worth the same number of points, but I don't want them together, I want the 4's and then the 3's.

- "Word list for last round" mysteriously moved up to where I want it, in the upper right corner. For weeks I was unable to move it there -- it would spring back to where it had been -- but now it moved there without my asking. Both at home and at the office.

Thanks. If there are other glitches, I haven't found them yet. If can't reproduce my problems, post a reply and I will try to help.

I forgot to mention. I used to see 20-40 people in beta, now I am back to seeing hundreds. Last night, the count was consistently in the high 200's (I remember one game that had 296 players). Makes it harder to win, but it's pretty awesome.

But the option I'd *really* like is simply to be able to play Weboggle again. :-(

Pleeease could you put Weboggle back online? Pretty please? With sugar on top??
