Time Keeps on Slipping

By popular demand, there is now a 60-second interval between rounds instead of 30 seconds. Many of you were getting frustrated at not having enough time to review the results of each round. We'll try this for a week, then I'll test out my new quick-poll code to ask you all whether you prefer 30, 60, or perhaps a compromise at 45.

Oh, and I'm off to the courthouse to apply for inclusion in the county's Attorney Appointment List. If all goes well, very soon I'll be able to start defending people who are accused of misdemeanors.

Update: ARGH! I HATE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS! IT MAKES MY LIFE HARDER!
Just wanted to get that off my chest.

Update update: Change of plans - I'm going to try 45 seconds for a few days, to give you all a feel for it, before I poll everyone.

I like 30 better but could live with 45...

I like the 60 seconds

30 seconds was just right. 60 seconds makes me feel like I should stop playing and do something else.

Anonymous said...

I also prefer the 30 seconds

Go back to 30 seconds

Anonymous said...

60 second is too long. I don't need to review that long. The board will never be the same again.

I end up leaving rather than waiting. 60 seconds is seeming like an eternity. Bring back the 30 seconds! :-)

Anonymous said...

I have to agree. 60 seconds seems too long. 30 is about right. 45 is still too long as a compromise.

I like the 30 seconds better but am willing to compromise with 45.

I'm for the 30 seconds also....Good luck with the courthouse! Thanks for the site...

argh 60 seconds is so long I have time to post here between games.

60 seconds is excruciating.

60 seconds is too long for those of us with a short attention span.

Anonymous said...

30 seconds is good...60 seconds is too long and then I really feel like I should be doing something else.

Please return to 30!

I'm with the 30 second crowd but can see trying 45...

I'm starting to think that this might be a good place to divide the game - for each of the 4x4 and 5x5 versions, have "Rapid Fire" rounds separated by 30 second intervals running concurrently with "Normal" or "Think Break" rounds separated by longer (perhaps 60s) intervals. This would also reduce the number of players in each round to a level that you might find more manageable. It's an idea, anyway.

60 seconds is way too long, it gives me more than enough time to 1) realize i should be working, 2) feel guilty, and 3) stop playing altogether. 30 seconds creates a more addictive environment, for better or worse...!

Anonymous said...

Evan, I believe 45 seconds would be perfect.

Anonymous said...

Liked 30 secs...but 45 would be ok.

30 seconds seemed too fast if I wanted to look up an interesting word. 60 seconds seems a bit long, for the same reasons mentioned by others. When I'm ready to start the next game, there's about 15 seconds left on the clock, so 45 seconds might be the best of both worlds. I like the idea of having the option for rapid-fire or think time, though. If that's a reasonable possibility, that would be my first choice.

Anonymous said...

60 seconds is too long. 45 would be good (I liked 30). Or the suggestion to have Rapid Fire vs Think Break rounds available. But if too much work, 45 would be okay.

Anonymous said...

We vote for 30 seconds!! 60 and we're losing interest. Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Bring back 30 seconds (even that is a little too long).

Anonymous said...

If I could snapshot, I wouldn't need all that time; I could review the game later, offline.

Anonymous said...

take a poll - this drives me crazy!

30 seconds is fine. 45 is okay. 60 is way too long. I'm more concerned that right now the game is not showing any players at all. I can play and it adds up my score, but then doesn't show my score or anyone else's either. I've reloaded and rebooted, so I don't think the problem is on my end.

Anonymous said...

I like 30 sec. Prepared to try 45 sec but 60 sec is WAY too long. Rapid fire and "Normal" rounds could be good also - currently there are 146 people playing so this could divide the field a little.

Anonymous said...

I like 30 better - could live with 45. But overall I just love this game - thank you!

Anonymous said...

I liked the 30 seconds way better - 60 seconds between makes me feel like bailing.

Thanks for the great work!

60 seconds is too long, it's one third of the length of a game!
We're sticking to 30 seconds here at http://weboggle.info

30 seconds

Anonymous said...

i agree 30 seconds is better

Anonymous said...

60 seconds is really too long. I can find everything I need to know about the game in or around 30. But thanks for listening to other peoples' comments and giving it a try.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree... 60 seconds is too long, i find 30 seconds extensive sometimes!!

Anonymous said...

i like the idea of a rapid fire game. i sometimes get bored of waiting for a new game to begin.

Anonymous said...

30 seconds is right. if someone needs more time, they can sit out the next round.....

Ralph Silberman said...

Much too long. Try for 45 at least.

Anonymous said...

60 seconds seems long, but 45 might be just right. 30 sec. was too short

Anonymous said...

We would also like 30 seconds again, but could also deal with 45! Thanks again for the game.

Unknown said...

I like 45 for the time between.

Anonymous said...

30 seconds gets my vote. 60 seconds is 'way too long!

Anonymous said...

30 seconds was plenty long enough! Thanks for the great game.

Anonymous said...

I like having the extra time to review the results... and to learn some new words! However, 60 seconds is a little longer than necessary. 45 would be my preference.

30 seconds was better. 45 might be OK.

60 seconds = TOO LONG

30 seconds is better, but 45 might be okay.

I like the 30 seconds better - please bring it back

Anonymous said...

I prefer 30 seconds.

Thanks for everything!

Anonymous said...

30 seconds would be my choice. Thanks for all you do to make this game an enjoyable respite!

Thirty seconds, please. This decreases the span of time with which to ponder my own inactivity and realize that the majority of my life revolves around this game. Damn you, Evan.

Agreed. Even after nine years, I'm still learning new words and enjoy the extra time per round to do so.

60 seconds = Bad
30 seconds = Good!!

Anonymous said...

30 Seconds is long enough:
Thanks.

Anonymous said...

I know that many people have already said this but I still want to put my $.02 in... 30 seconds was perfect. 60 seconds is WAY too long. I could live with 45. Thank you for a great game!!

Anonymous said...

I also agree. 60 seconds is too long. I never had a problem with 30seconds. Sounds to me like 45 seconds just might be the ticket.

Anonymous said...

30 seconds was perfect. If you want to look up a word, open a new window and let the rest of us play. 60 does make you lose interest.

Anonymous said...

I prefer 30 seconds and so does my 90 year old mother. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

I agree with everyone who has said 60 seconds is too long. I do think 30 seconds is too quick, especially if you're on a slower connection - sometimes, you're still waiting for scores to show up for the previous game when the next game starts. So perhaps 45 seconds would be a good compromise, at least to try out for a week. (Giving people a choice would of course be the best solution, but that's much harder to implement.)

30 seconds

Anonymous said...

30 seconds was a little short sometimes: when I'm in an analytical/I want to improve my play mode. 60 is too long-- I end up opening another window to try and do little things in between games. Then I miss the start of the next game. 40 seconds would be a good interval for me. I would rather go back to 30 than 60.

Anonymous said...

30 is my favorite
45 would be ok
60 is too long
Thanks!

Anonymous said...

60 seconds is too long. 30-40 is an OK range.

Anonymous said...

30 seconds is plenty - if I have to wait 60, I just walk away.

Anonymous said...

45 is a good comprimise

Anonymous said...

Even at 45 I don't stay around, I check other things then I'm late in getting back. I was happy with 30. Thanks for all the hard work on the site!

Anonymous said...

I'm liking it. At first, the delay seemed too long. Now, I enjoy the slightly extended break so that I can sip some liquid, peruse the word list, and take a breather before resuming intense concentration.

Overall, I think the 45-second intermission is an ideal compromise. I expect that newer players will appreciate the extra 15 seconds to get their bearings and collect their wits, too.

Anonymous said...

I prefer 30 seconds. I lose interest waiting!

Anonymous said...

BTW, the board still doesn't resize properly most of the time (in Camino, Safari, and Firefox on the Mac, anyway); latency is still an extremely annoying problem (and I'm not a demon typist by any means!); and the current version is still a poor cousin of the original WEBoggle.

So I'm wondering: Since you're twiddling with interval times -- a minor factor in overall gameplay -- does that mean you're satisfied with the functioning of the game itself, and that you consider it ready for prime time?

Evan Simpson said...

death is not cheap: I'm happy with the state of the game in the sense that it is stable, working for most people, and has only minor and elusive bugs. But I'm certainly not going to stop going after the issues that you mention, and I have a long TODO list of features in front of me. I just had to slow down a bit, and take care of other matters

Anonymous said...

OK. Thanks for clarifying, Evan. And best of luck launching your criminal defense career!

I am voting back to 30!

The new font is harder to read than the old, sans-serif one. Hopefully the new one is just an April Fools joke and will be gone tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

Re the font - never mind! After I posted I discovered the font I'm seeing is my own monitor's default font. :-)

Cynthia (Chief Nestling) said...

Evan, I second death is cheap in saying that the original Weboggle was much, much better. It seems like every time I check in there is some new change that I consider for the worse. 60 seconds is way, WAY too long. Even the current 45 seconds is boringly long, to me. People who want to review words can snapshot and then sit the next round out.

Anonymous said...

yea........ its alll good

i did possibly the stupidest thing in the world. i thought and wondered as i sat at the computer playing if the game would let me ban myself. i clicked the button and WHAM! .......i'm banned lol

gotta figure out how to "unban" myself

any help? :D

Evan Simpson said...

Banning only lasts until you close the game window, although it does send a message to the server for me to review.
